Thousands of people gathered in Saint Peter's Square in Vatican City to see
him.
The Pope announced he was stepping down earlier this month after eight years
in charge.
Pope Benedict will carry on living in the Vatican City after he steps down
and plans to devote the rest of his life to study and prayer.
The Vatican say his successor could be chosen before Easter.
